"On "SNL", Fey as Palin, and Palin as Palin."

Tina Fey portrayed Sarah Palin on October 18, 2008.  Palin was portrayed during her first news conference as the vice presidential canidate.  The executive producer, Lorne Michaels, along with actos Alec Baldwin adn Mark Wahlberg made appearances on the show.  Alec Baldwin mistakened Palin for Tina Fey as he told her he felt it wasnt worth the time to impersonate someone so unintelligent already.  Once Palin told him that she was the real thing, Baldwin apologized and said the she ,"was way hotter in person."  Ms. Fey''s impersonation has been called one of the "most pitch-perfect in political satire." Palin made a second appearance about an hour later during the "Weekly Update" sketch.  During it, Amy Poehler raped about John McCain's smile and Sarah Palin, in general.  When Poeler said for "all the mavericks" to put their hands in the air, Palin began to follow along.  Sarah Palin stated a few weeks before the shows taping that she would "love to" participate in an SNL skit.

This article is being covered fairly/objectively.  The author only states that the comedian's impersonation was dead on with the canidate, Sarah Palin's, way of speech and past conferences. The author never gives any prerequisites as to how Palin would be (good or bad) as Vice President or even President of the country.

Sarah Palin's performance on SNL had seemed to only prove to America that she  cannot take the role as vice president, or even president, seriously.  Her guest performance on SNL was viewed by over 14 million people.  The viewing is SNL'S largest since 1994.  Viewers have seen jokes made but have not witnessed a turn around of speech and mindset of Palin since her crash and burn interview with Katie Couric.  Tina Fey's impression of Palin has been accurate to the poin where she is able to mimick Palin's very body language correctly.  This undermines the idea of people taking Palin seriously even more. In the middle of a skit where Tina Fey was holding a press conference, Palin took her spot and continued talking, allowing Fey to step away without anyone noticing the slightest diffence in speech or manner.  Sarah Palin's performance on SNL has proved that she is more qualified to "host her own T.V. show" than become President of the United States.

This article is more biased than fair.  It leans to the direction of an opion, as the truth states that Sarah Palin has made many appearances on SNL ect but it says that she may be more ready to be the creator of her own T.V. show that Vice President or even President of the United States.  Uses evidence that other people feel this way, like when he talked about the fact that a major politician, Al Sharpton, after watching SNL the night before, decided to put in the vote for Barac Obama.  But, at the same time, it is partially fair in giving leadway to a possibility that Palin could be a good canidate. Aauthor compares her to Ronald Regan and the fact that he was a movie star before becoming President of the United States. Ends on the note that he feels she is better prepared to be an entertainer though, which made me feel this article was biased.

"Update Thurday: Bush Endorsement"

http://www.nbc.com/Saturday_Night_Live/video/clips/backstage-gov-palin-visits/773882/

www.nbc.com

10/23/08

10/24/08 4:10 pm, and then at 10/27/08 6:28 am.

George Bush, played by Will Ferrel, decides to give an address. He wants to endorse the Republican Canidates John McCain and Sarah Palin. Before he invited them in, he makes jokes about himself as president witout even realizing it.  The satire shows that he is oblivious to the fall of the economy and country in general.  When he invites the canidates in, only Sarah Palin enters. She is flashing a smile and waving her hand high in the air.  George Bush goes to address her as Vice President but mixes up the vice presidential priorities with the priorities of the President him or herself.  This again shows his own obliviousness to the responsibilities in that office.  As George and Sarah talk, she states how busy she had been traveling, speaking, and most importantly, to her, shopping.  She also refers to herself as having the same bitchiness as a highschool teenage girl would.  Palin's husband then enters, dressed in a snowsuit, presenting John McCain. Apparently, John McCain ran away when he heard that George Bush wanted to give him an endorsement.  Bush asks to take a picture with the canidates and as John McCain tried to just runaway, Sarah Palin poses for the camera as if she was in the middle of a photoshoot.  President Bush then endorses John McCain and says that a cote for John McCain is a vote for George W. Bush.

-This excerpt of SNL is biased in the fact the it portrays Palin in an ill light, making her look unfit for the role of Vice President of the United States.

"SNL: Backstage: Govenor Palin comes to Visit"

http://www.nbc.com/Saturday_Night_Live/video/clips/backstage-gov-palin-visits/773882/

www.nbc.com

10/27/08

Palin is seen in a better light. Behind the scenes, one can see that everyone is just following a script.  Palin is looking over hers while other people look for their cues.  After puns are made, the fake laughter is heard in the backgorund. Palin seems at ease and the actors seem at ease with her.  At the end of the filming of the show, Palin simply says thankyou very much and seems glad to be there.

This article is fair/objective. It shows the actions of Palin standing infront of a camera and reading over notes and talking with the actual cast of SNL. No jokes are made and no insinuations of jokes are being made.  The cast if being friendly and Palin looks official/mature in the behind the scenes footadge.

"Update: Sarah Palin Rap"

http://www.nbc.com/Saturday_Night_Live/video/clips/update-palin-rap/773781/

www.nbc.com

10/27/08

The announcer begins by stating that Sarah Palin is here to clear up misconceptions about the her in the presidential campaign.  She states that she cannot do the piece that she rehersed. bShe thought it would be a bad idea for the campaign.  The newscaster, Seth, then asks if Amy Poehler remembers the skit. After hesitating overbearingly, she jumps right into the rap.  She comments on John McCain's creepy smile, there are dancing eskimos, and Palin's husband (depicted by an actor) comes out dancing in a snow-mobile suit.  She states that even though Palin is from Alaska, she is pro-oil drilling.  Poeler states that Palin can see Russia from her porch.  Then, when Amy says for all the Mavericks in the house to put their hands up, Palin joins right in, hands up and all.  Poeler states that Palin likes to eat red meat and kill animals.  At the end of the rap, Seth states that he feels it probably was a good idea not to do the rap, and she agrees right away.

This article is definitely biast to Palin. It makes fun of her and shows her in a very ill light.  She is even participating in the skit which makes it worse because it shows that she is ok with it, even if she really isn't.  The show could make any person who has not been following the political campagn believe that Sarah Palin was just a big joke.

"Govenor Palin: Cold Open"

http://www.nbc.com/Saturday_Night_Live/video/clips/gov-palin-cold-open/773761/

www.nbc.com

10/27/08

Live at a press conference of Sarah Palin, she walks out and says how excited she is to be infront of everyone.  When asked about Senator John McCain's debate performance, she replied by stating how angry he looked and how he even gritted his teeth. She then states that Barac Obama was a very smooth speaker and sounded like an angel. She pretty much badgers John McCain and makes Barac Obama look good.  The next question person asked if she felt there were some states that were not Pro-American and she names some right off of her tounge.  Then she decided to perform some pagent walking across the stage.  We are then taken behind the scene where the real Palin is talking with the Director of the show. Then Alec Baldwin comes in and starts talking to Palin and the Director as if Palin was Tina Fey. He goes on to say how Tina should not have to lower herself to that level and play her. He brings up the nickname, Caribou Barbie and calls her a horrible woman. He is then introduced to her and now knows that she is "the Real Palin."  Back in the press conference, Tina Fey is told that the "real one" is here, and instead, Palin takes the stage to announce the beginning of the show.

Sarah Palin is also percieved in a very negative way in this SNL skit. Agian, it is worse because she is participating in the skit. She doesnt not say anything bad about herself but watches as Tina Fey rips her apart.  Tina Fey does a Mockery conference, in which she totally destroys McCain "by accident" and does "fancy pageant walking". Once again, Palin is seen as putting on a whole act instead of really being a serious part of the election.

-Michelle Armonda Padavano

So far, in my summaries, I have mostly seen a lot of ill satire mocking Govenor Palin for the mistakes she has made in her speeches and overall campaign performance.  Sometimes, SNL takes direct quotes from her meetings with Katie Couric while for a large proportion of it, they blow it out of context.  Palin has done many speeches since the first few that crashed and burned. She has done speeches very eloquently and is a very educated and smart person. But the media has printed an image of such satire and mockery on her that it is hard to see or expect her to be anything else.  The media is very bi-ist and SNL obviously pokes more fun at the Republican party than they do to the Democrats.  Tina Fey has been able to play such an identical picture of Palin that many people associate that image with her being Vice or even President.  I feel that as a perosn of the public, I do not have connections to the "Real Palin" in which to see her in a good light through news coverage or t.v. time.  Instead she has been the butt of many jokes, making it hard to see her as anything else.

I will use example of this from my summary about the SNL SKIT: Update Thursday: Bush Endorsement"

In this article, Palin in present with minimal or close to minimal lines/actions.  Still, with every line the Tina Fey says and with every action that she portrays, the respect people have for Palin decreases more and more.  Palin says that she has been very busy with the political campagn, but hightens the importance and stress of shopping, which has been the most exciting thing to her so far.  When President Bush (Will Ferrel) comments on how "fauxy " she is, Tina Fey replies that she see's herself as part "highschool bitchy".   Palin is seen as immature and here for the showbiz part of the campaign. In general, SNL has been horriblyy biast with the republican party.  They have more satire and jokes and skits leaning towards the destruction of them than they do with the democratic party.   At the end of the skit, when Bush asks if he could have his pitcure taken with the republican canidates, as John McCain runs away from the camera because he knows it will hurt his politcal campaign, Palin smiles big for the camera because it is a photo opportunity and nothing more. Wherever the cameras goe, it is portrayed that Palin wants to be there, hiking her skit up so that people will like her more, just like it was done in the end of skit.  SNL has taken over with the satire an dhighlighting and exemplifying the stereotypical opinions the majority has pertaining to this election.

Thesis: Most of the Articles concerning Senator Palin were very biased, leaving two unbiased articles to shame.

Article 1 : “Fey as Palin and Palin as Palin”

Unbiased

Showed fair representation of Palin in terms of her behind the scenes of SNL.

Spoke that Fey’s impersonation has been called one of the most pitch perfect in political satire, but did not compare this to Palin as a person, (in real life).

Said what she wore and what she did before the weeks of the SNL show but did not give any biast critique.

Told the skit as a story, saying the scenes without any critique or opinion.

Stated rumors of Palin wanting to make a guest appearance on the show, SNL, but not confirmed till recently

Said that McCain campaign has been keeping tight guard on media talking to Palin, but that she did say she would “love to make a guest appearance on SNL”.

All of these are examples in the article in which the author states the facts of both side:

States that Fey impersonates Palin perfectly. And says that Palin is a candidate for vice president that is going to rallys and getting the job done.

Only satire in the article was the satire presented in the SNL, no added view by the author was pushed on, very “robotic” almost.

The reader would not be able to tell the author’s own views from reading this paper

*Stays away from Spin perfectly

*First article, unbiased.

Article 2: “Real Sarah Palin, Real Entertainer”

                Definitely Biased. First by Commission.

States two separate views, though one is stated stronger, very much stronger, than the other.

Spends more time explaining that Palin went on SNL and is more fit to run a T.V. show than be a politician (which is one view.)

Only spends a small small amount of time (at the end of the article/ Biast by placement) discussing the fact that she may just be a politician that gets the media’s attention very easily. Even does the favor of comparing her to Ronald Reagan.

Fact is though, that the author does this all in one sentence, not justifying and/or matching up to the amount that he wrote on the other view. He also supported the other view more, saying that many many many, if not all, people felt this way and that even a famous political figure, Al Sharpton, changed his vote because of her appearance on the show.

            Biast by Story Selection:

The author only follows stories that are making Palin look like the claim he states: Being nothing but an Entertainer.

He talked about the fact that Fey can imitate Palin very well and that the SNL skits showed a portrayal, along with guest appearance of Palin, that made her look so bad.

Only talked about the interview with Katie Couric where Palin messed up and chocked on her words. Does not even this out with sufficient evidence of all the rallys and get together where Palin said some great things.

If she was THAT bad, not a single soul would support her.  There is a reason, if not more than one reason, why she was in the running office but the author did not state any of them in his claims.

Biast by Placement

The whole story pretty much discussed one view and opinion of Palin and being a non seirous, just wanting attention, politician who is staring on T.V. in stupid roles such as on SNL.

The other view of Palin was not discussed until the last paragraph/second to last sentence of the article

Should of talked about/ compared Palin to Ronald Reagan earlier in the article so the audience did not get a single, negative connotation of Palin before seeing her in a good light.  Should have been presented with both views at the beginning and in the same amount of description.

Instead, the audience had to wait till the end to realize, it is possible to be involved with T.V. and not be considered careless and selfish, even during the campaign.  The audience would of gotten a different connotation Palin starring on SNL if the author went out of his way to put the other opinion of Palin in at the beginning, and at an equal balance with the other view.

Biased by Selection of Sources

The author of this article only got information pertaining to the negative connotations given about Palin. He only focused on the reasons for the 4 million or whatever viewers was because Fey interprets Palin perfectly. This is making it sound like Palin is just a complete joke and nothing serious.

Stories could have been about how by participating in National T.V., Sarah Palin could have been expanding herself and showing that there are so many good things about being appealing to the audience, even with How Ronald WReagon. There are probably more present examples of how it shows many good things also. But only negative stories, statistics, and connotations.

Biased (Strongly) by Spin

The author does this largely in this article. He makes it so that close to the whole article is one sided, “spinned” if you will, to show only the negative connotation of the candidate.

This type of constant bullying of Palin is what was favorable to the author. The author did not give fair representation of the other aspect of Palin.

Based by Policy Recommendation/Condemnation

While the author did not recommend or condemn a certain policy, He did recommend/condemn a certain candidate/political party for the 2008 Presidential Election.

McCain’s name was never mentioned and Palin’s name was only blasted with ridicule.

Obama was unscathed in the article. The one sentence about him stated that Al Sharpton decided to vote for Obama after seeing the Palin SNL skit.

He never talked about how Palin participating in a televised event would gain her votes in the office. He only talked about the performance depleting votes. While some people may find this true, the contrasting idea is also probably equally legit.

Article 3: “Update Thursday, Bush Endorsement”

            Biased by Omission

Talks only about what people presume/think. The most obvious fears for the republican candidates, Both John McCain and Palin, are stated here. A lot of unbeneficial things happened when Bush was president.

By saying that a vote for McCain is a vote for George push, the SNL skit is stating that America will be another 4-8 years of what they just went through.

By showing Palin with a airhead smile and saying stupid things, it echoes the fears of many Americans that state that Palin will not be a good ancor to take over the position for McCain. So there, even the last resort plan is unreliable.

The article is biased by Omission because it only shows the Republican Canidates, especially Palin, in a negative, presumptious light. It does not even present the idea that the republicans would be good candidates for the presidency. It simply tears them down again and again over how crappy of leaders they both would be.

This is unfair to the people who believe the republicans would of done a great job in the presidential office. This is also unfair to the amount of training and work both republican candidates did during their career, preparing for, and during the 2008 political race.

            Biased by Story Selection:

The only stories the Author used in the skits are those that mock or give generalizations and stereotypes about each of the members in the republican party that are being covered

. None of the stories cover, for instance, the charity work that either candidate has done,

None of the stories cover the sevice McCain gave to our country or the torture he underwent.

It all remains to the big well known stories in which each of the three republicans has crashed, burned, and made an ass of themselves.

            Biased by Placement

While the author only did focus on a negative aspect of the republicans candidates, the author still used placement as an important part of getting their point across.  The last thing that “President Bush” says , while holding McCain’s hand to endorse him, is “That a vote for John McCain is a vote for George Bush.”  He states that when you see John McCain’s face, you should think of his own.

A majority of people do not respect George Bush as president and feel that during his term, he did a job that was unbeneficial to the country. So by saying this at the very end, it pretty much sums up SNL’S opinion of the republicans and states what they want the audience to remember, less they forget everything else.

            Biased by Spin

While the spin placed on the republican candidates was negative, it did its job to reverse people’s thinking into feeling that the Democratic party was better for them

From the words that they said to the moves they made, The Republican Canidates were  demolished and torn down from all ends

By denouncing that the next 8 years will be what it was when George Bush was president, it stated that the Democratic Party would do a better job taking care of our country.

We would benefit more from the Democrats, than we would from the republicans.

Article 4:

Unbiased, Shows behind the scene footage of Palin and the SNL staff filming the skit for T.V.

All the SNL people are presented and Palin is seen acting the role.

Palin is seen going over a script and reciting lines. This shows that she is a politician simply participating in a televised event. The actors are being respectable to her and asking her to move center stage or in another direction

The behind the scenes footage shows everyone excited to have completed each seen

Even the laughter after the puns are made sounds staged, so that the people watching the (behind the scenes) footage even know its an act

            Unbiased. Partially

One last note is that this behind the scenes footage was only shows online, which can account for the fact that it can be partially a biased action, not showing it on T.V. Because if it was shown on T.V., people would see Palin in a better light. Takes a lot of searching and eagerness to find/look for footage on the internet. More than it takes to turn on the T.V. or radio.

 Article 5:

                Biased.

The SNL skit is biased first by Commission.

While Palin is present in her political real person form, and while the candidate is having a conversation with wise decisions about not performing a skit that could deter a wrong view of her as a politician, not all the facts were given about her political campaign and equal time was not spend on bring her up as it was tearing her down.

When Amy Poeler began raping about all the things that Palin was made fun of, Palin got right into the act, dancing and putting her hands up in the air. What Palin might have been doing is going along with it to show people that it is not a big deal, SNL is not true, it’s a big act, its for laughs, and so by participating, she was showing that it was so easy going.

But people, most people, got scared from seeing her participate because they felt it almost justified the fact that SNL was showing  a true portrayal of Palin, which was not so.

The skit shows Palin as a govenour but then denounces her like she was an unfit politician. The balance is uneven and the construed view is overpowering

                        Biased by Policy Condemnation

SNL went into detail, within the rap, about Palin being pro-oil drilling even though she was from Alaska.  Though this is true, Amy did not go into the benefits stated by republicans and reasons why they would do this, along with restrictions as to keep the area still protected.

This policy was mocked as was , maybe, the policy with Russia, (international policy?) And the ongoing joke that Palin can see Russia from her porch.  From one of the first interviews, Palin made a slip up/choke up while talking and SNL jumped on this right away, stating how unfit Palin would be to work with people internationally.

                                Biased by Spin

Even with Palin’s participation in the skit, the skit was put on with a spin to show Palin as a joke. While people need to remember that SNL was made for laughs and to purposely show candidates in a bad light, many believed SNL was just reiterating the things that Palin did in real life.

The rap was pertaining to Palin wanting to just kill and use animals/resources and be more concerned with small, un important things than the changes that really were needed in America.  Nothing good aboiut Palin was said in the skit, only denouncing statements about her and her husband.

                                Biased by  Story Selection

The Stories and statements used in the skit were the things that made Palin look bad. Nothing positive, no positive stories were made or said to counteract or balance the political satire made. The satire made was just caked on thick with punches to her political party and ethics.

                                Biased by Labeling

Palin was labeled in the skit both directly and indirectly.  She was called a Maverick and even put her hands up to play around in the skit

Indirectly, she was labeled oblivious and greedy, false caring politician who was in the run for her own selfish purposes.

Article 6:

                Biased

Biased by Policy

Fey, talking for Palin, states that there are only some Pro American states in America.  Presents a National Policy that is divided and that she, if was elected, would not be able to bring together.

                                Biased by Spin

Fey is asked a question about John McCain’s campaign, and while she said that John McCain did a wonderful job, she badgered him more than lifted him up in the answer.  This spin makes it sound like whenever Palin talked, more republicans were lost and became democrats.  She then stated that Obama was such a good speaker, sounding like, “An Angel” and  honored him. This spin makes it sound like even the republican candidate thinks Obama is a better candidate than herself and McCain.

                                Biased by Commission

This article is biased by Commision because it badgers Palin, but then Palin is seen participating in it and making it lok like it is fake and not real. At the end, Palin announces the start of the show, which could be an underlying message to the world that it is just that, a show, and not reality.

But the positive things about Palin are unbalanced with the way she is portrayed by Tina Fey. Tina is mimicking abd talking about her the whole time, while Palin comes out and does one or two positive things at the very end of the intro.

                                Biast by Placement

The beginning of the show jumps right into Tina Fey discussing about her as Vice President and the Campaign and things of that nature that make her look bad. It is even just in the way that it is dais that makes Palin look like a bad role model and leader of the country.

The real Palin does not come out till the very end of the skit, so when everyone see’s the real her, after seeing Tina dressed up in an identical outfit, everyone associated the real Palin with the stupid, oblivious, “dumb blonde” like actions that Tina was doing. This is unfair to Palin’s image as a candidate for the presidential election

                                Biast by Labeling

Palin is labeled as a bad politican firstly. Obam is labeled as a good politician by his speaking skills which Palin notes as “Sounding like an angel”

Palin is labeled as someone going up to the podium just for show, as Tina Fey performs some “pageant waling” in which she was waving her hand and smiley obnoxiously to the camera
