Description

STAND is an anti-genocide coalition of students across the country determined to raise awareness and help stop the current genocide in Darfur, Sudan. The club takes people from all backgrounds and brings them together in a unified effort. Some of the statistics provided by the Drew Clubs website are that there are currently “400,000 dead, 2.5 million internally displaced, and 3.5 million are starving in Darfur”. These numbers are subject to rise almost weekly. STAND actively tries to lend their voice to others who cannot speak for themselves, and make sure the U.S government knows how they feel about this atrocity. They make sure of this by dynamically giving presentations and information seminars to campuses. Their website www.standnow.org allows anyone to donate to the cause and for students to join the cause.

STAND wants others to recognize what is currently going on over in Dafur.  In doing so, they’ve created “DafurFast” and it occurs on December 5th.  During this day, students are going to give up something that they are going to purchase, and the money purchasing the wanted item will be submitted willingly to the club for donation toward the coutry.

Why someone might join

I feel that this club is very important to have on campus. The club itself is only a small part of a very large organization. STAND employs smaller branches over a wide range to help spread their message to more people all over the country. Honestly, it was not surprising to find this kind of organization on campus. I expected a school like Drew would be affiliated with an organization like this, because of the already active community players in the school. Reading on Drew’s website, it is hard to over look the abroad studies, environmental awareness, and volunteerism that this school is all about. This organization seems like something I would like to join, however I would have to see how it can fit around my schedule and my other extracurricular activities.

It is meaningful and an act of kindness to show others that situations occurring in Dafur is not forgotten by anyone.  Besides that, it was one way to stop the genocide that are going on.

STAND's website says: "Born out of the fight to stop the genocide in Darfur, Sudan, STAND is devoted to creating a sustainable student network that actively fights genocide wherever it may occur. We seek to unite students around the world in a permanent anti-genocide constituency." http://www.standnow.org
