“Palin Disclosures raise question on Vetting”

Many people wonder about John McCain’s Vice President Selection and wanted to know if he had put in any time to learn about her background before making his decision to choose her. Their reasoning behind their concerns was that Palin’s 17 year old daughter was 5 months pregnant and was going to get married to the father, that Palin had a private lawyer in a legislative ethics investigation in Alaska into finding out if she had abused her power in dismissing the state’s public safety commissioner. As well as Mr. Palin was arrested 22 years ago on a drunken-driving charge. Republicans were worried about McCain’s choice believing that it would give others the ammunition to say he was a bad decision maker. McCain didn’t originally want Palin but wanted either Tim Pawlenty or Mitt Romney which would have both been the safer choice as well as the more predictable choice which is then why he changed his direction to Palin. But it is seen that no one looked into Palin’s background, but the McCain administration argued that they had and knew about her past.

The artical explains how people in general dont belive that Palin is the best choice for the job. They focuse to much on her past and her husbands past believing that her past will reflect her future. They dont discuss Bidens past. Leading this article to be a lttlie biased and unfair because they focus to much on information that is not relivent. And they only focuse on the uninportant issues for herand not for other cadidents.

“Palin Calls Reported Attacks ‘Atrocious and Unacceptable’”

Palin in an interview responded to the news reports that had said that republicans had been making offensive and threatening comments that had been directed to Obama, and she said that if she had heard them she would have said something, but she has never heard those comments. Palin also explained that she would not stop accusing Obama of being friends with terrorist, because his actions show that he is. She also defends her beliefs about god, she looks to him for guidance through hard times.

Throughout the articale many quotes from Palin are used and only from her and it is ineresting to see the quotes that use to show a portratie of her. Using quotes about her religon and how she thinks Obama is as close to a terrorist as you get shows a very detailed view of her and will definutle shape the readers views. So although the information is true it is still portaide as being baised.

“Republicans reportedly spend $150,000 on Palin clothing and grooming”

By Julie Bosman

International Herald Tribune

Palin has been spending money that is meant for the campaign on herself. She is buying clothes from many different high end stores and is seen as dead weight for McCain. The question is raised on whether or not it is actually legal for her to take campaign money for personal use. Other candidates that were in the raise in the beginning were also criticized such as Hillary Clinton John Edward for how much they spent on their hair. But polls have shown that because of Palin voters are hesitant to vote for McCain.

Talking about how much money Palin pends is unrelavent to how she is as a leader. To much enfasses is put on unrelavent information that does influence the readers making this article biased. It goes into strong details of her clothing but not detailed in other candidents.

“McCain has terse response on Palin shopping spre”

In Florida McCain had to answer many questions on Palin’s shopping expenses, which he was not thrilled about. His main answer was that she needed cloths and in the end they would be donated. That was the standard answer. A complaint was filled on Palin for violating Federal Election Campaign Act by buying her and her family clothes with money that was not hers. They also asked Joe Biden how pays for his suits and he said that he did.

I think that this is a little biased because it gives a quote from Biden but not from Palin so she cannot stand up for herself in what she did but they give quotes from Biden that basically says that he would never do anything wrong. And the whole issue has been blown up by the media so that any article that is writen on in is going to be baised because it does not matter the story is just trying to get readers to belive that she can be a good leader.

“On ‘SNL’ It’s the Real Sarah Palin, Looking Like a Real Entertainer”

By Alessandra Stanley

The New York Times

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/10/20/arts/television/20watch.html?scp=1&sq=sarah%20palin%20and%20snl&st=cse

Sarah Palin went on “Saturday Night Live” to make fun of herself on television as well as to show the public a curtain side of her. She wanted to bring humor to the table, hoping that that will help in the decision to whether or not she is fit for the job of Vice President. More than 14 million people watched Palin on SNL which is the highest amount since 1994. Other elected officials have gone on SNL such as John McCain, Hillary Clinton, and Colin Powell. They have gone on SNL to show votes a softer side of them, but Palin has already shown her softer side. Palin charmed Democrats, but did little to sooth the thoughts of republican voters. She is compared to Ronald Ragan.

I think that this article isn’t really biased; it gives information from different people and doesn’t really take sides of for or against Palin. It just talks about the facts and not about the writers own opinion.

“Palin Promises Choice for Disabled Students”

By Kate Zernike

The New York Times

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/10/25/us/politics/25palin.html?scp=4&sq=palin&st=cse

Sarah Plain made her first policy speech of the campaign that announced that the McCain administration would allow special-needs students to attend privet school for the price of public schools. This proposal is seen as a good by parents but not appreciated by different schools. Around seven million students receive special-education services nationwide with around 70,000 attending private schools. McCain and Palin’s plan would then allow states to from a plan to grant schools the choice to disable students that are using that money, with federal special-financing to fallow. It is hard to predicate the amount of children who would then attend private schools but this is a high priority in the campaign.

This article does a fair job in staying in the middle, there are no taking sides. The reporter just reports the facts without putting their own feelings into the article.

“Receiving more than $150,000 in clothing and accessories from the Republican National Committee last month doesn't just run counter to Gov. Sarah Palin's image as a "Wal-Mart Mom from Wasilla," it also might have violated the spirit if not the letter of a campaign finance law co-authored by her running mate, Sen. John McCain.”This shows that she spends too much on clothes and that she is not like the average American that she puts herself to be by “Wal-Mart Mom”. This is then seen to hurt her and McCain. Then because Palin received money to buy clothes it makes McCain look bad because the articles makes it seem like he does not fallow his word. The 2002 McCain-Feingold law prohibits funds that "are donated for the purpose of supporting the activities of a federal or state officeholder" from being used for personal expenses, including clothing, but it doesn't preclude party committees from doing so….However, in May 1993, McCain said, "The use of campaign funds for items which most Americans would consider to be strictly personal reasons, in my view, erodes public confidence and erodes it significantly."”Even though McCain and his spokes people try to explain that afterword’s the clothing will be given to charity the clam of him not fallowing his word and Palin needing that much money for clothes is all ready out there. And now Palin is not doing well in the polls. “The poll of 1,159 registered voters from Oct. 17 to 20 found that 47 percent viewed Palin negatively; 38 percent saw her in a positive light. The poll found that 55 percent felt she wasn't qualified to be president. In September, shortly after McCain asked her to join the GOP ticket, Palin enjoyed a 47 to 27 percent positive rating…. “The question about her clothing fits in with her two-dimensional portrayal in this campaign: She's either the attack dog or the hot babe," Basch said. "The American people (in the MSNBC/WSJ poll) are showing that they believe that she doesn't have a command of domestic or foreign policy issues. She has not spoken out about the issues that matter in this campaign to women. "And now, people feel the hot babe is not going to be able to fix things," she said.” People are not taking her seriously as a candidate feeling that she is not able to lead. Their views then being affect by insignificant things such as her wardrobe. The article then shows that she is not true on her stances. “The new threads and accessories for Palin and her family included $49,425.74 spent at Saks Fifth Avenue stores in St. Louis and New York and $75,062.63 at Neiman Marcus - stores that don't have outlets in the small towns of "real America" that the Republican vice presidential nominee has been referencing lately in stump speeches.” This shows that she trys to be something that she is not just to get what she wants. So she contradicts herself. “Palin told CBS' Katie Couric last month that she considers herself a "feminist" but called herself "Caribou Barbie," while Alec Baldwin told her "You are way hotter in person" last weekend on "Saturday Night Live." Buttons with her photo and the tag "Hottest Governor from the Coldest State" sold out at the Republican National Convention in September. More than 1.2 million people have seen a video of Palin strutting in a one-piece bathing suit in a 1984 beauty contest” She is depicted to only care about her looks and not about major issues. “She has blurred that distinction by spending less time talking about issues that male politicians rarely discuss - like increased day care or equal pay for women - than she has telling voters that Barack Obama has "palled around" with terrorists.” She doesn’t take the job as seriously as a man would. She puts down others but doesn’t make changes herself. “She links Obama's tax policies to socialism, yet as Alaska's governor she taxed oil companies and redistributed their wealth to residents of her state in the form of $1,200 annual checks. She calls herself a reformer, yet an independent investigation into the Alaska troopergate scandal found that she "abused her power by violating" the state's ethics law.” The article shows that she isn’t ready for a big leadership role and that she is more about herself them others. “Perhaps Palin's self-appointed "hockey mom" image was a bit overblown."She was never a hockey mom, she was always the prom queen sitting in the back of the convertible waving to the hockey moms," said Simon Doonan, creative director at Barneys New York, the high-end clothing store.” The article at the end does give a some paragraphs to try and support Palin, but the article does show a side.

Overall i think that the articles do a fair job in not being biased there are some cases where you are able to see the reporters opinion but it is no saver. Many of the articles that i have read discuss weather or not Sarah Palin can be a good leader, and the articles bring up quotes from different people such as McCain Palin herself and Colin Powell. There are many articles that bring up info that is not really relevant to her being a good leader such as the clothes she buys and how much they're worth.
